About NoviThea
We are not here to do business as usual.
NoviThea is a research, innovation and technology organisation. We work on difficult challenges where evidence is incomplete or contested, different forces interact, and familiar responses no longer work well enough.

Why NoviThea exists
Many of the challenges worth working on do not fit neatly inside one discipline, institution or budget line.
Climate risk can become a question of livelihoods, security, infrastructure or public policy. A technology decision can also be a question of access, power, safety or inequality. Looking at only one part can miss what is driving the rest.
NoviThea begins with the challenge rather than the institutional boundary around it. We bring together the research, judgement, capabilities, experimentation and design the work actually requires.
That also means taking seriously what people already know from living and working within those conditions. Their knowledge can change the question itself, expose assumptions that would otherwise survive into the analysis, and reveal constraints that are invisible from outside.
The result does not have to be the same every time. Sometimes the work needs to settle a decision. Sometimes it produces evidence, a method a team can continue using, a change in practice, an intervention worth testing further, or something that needs to be built.
Principles that shape our work
The quality of the work depends not only on the methods we use, but on the choices made before, during and after the research. These principles guide those choices.
Start with the question, not the method
We first establish what needs to be understood or decided. Only then do we choose the methods that can answer it. We are also clear about the limits of the evidence: what it supports, what remains uncertain, whose experience is represented and whose may be missing.
Look at the wider system
Challenges rarely sit in isolation. Institutions, incentives, rules, resources, relationships and behaviour can reinforce one another or work against one another. We examine those connections because changing one part of a system can create consequences somewhere else. A response that ignores those relationships may work briefly, fail elsewhere or create a new difficulty.
Build knowledge with the people who know the context
People who live with a challenge, work within it or make decisions around it hold knowledge that cannot simply be supplied from outside. Their experience can change the question, expose incorrect assumptions and show why an apparently sensible response may not work in practice.
Test before making larger commitments
Ideas, methods, interventions and products should be tested before significant resources are committed to them. Testing can show that something should continue, change or stop, and we treat all three as legitimate findings. A pilot does not automatically justify scale; scaling requires its own evidence.
Consider what today’s decisions create tomorrow
Immediate needs matter, but so do the consequences that appear later. We consider emerging risks, long-term effects and the choices a decision may open or close. This is particularly important where decisions are difficult to reverse or where future generations will live with their consequences.
Technology has to justify its place
We use technology when it contributes something useful, not simply because a process can be digitised or automated. We consider access, exclusion, privacy, safety, accessibility, maintenance, cost, accountability and human judgement before deciding whether technology is appropriate. Sometimes the right decision is not to use it.
Who we work with
NoviThea works with people and organisations facing questions that require research, judgement, experimentation, stronger capability or a combination of these.
- Governments and public institutions
- Funders and foundations
- International organisations
- Civil society and NGOs
- Universities and research organisations
- Businesses
- Communities
- Children and young people, where appropriate and responsibly governed
- Partnerships and consortia
Research, the Lab and products serve different purposes
Our commissioned work responds to defined questions and needs from partners and clients. It can involve research, advisory work, capability-building, experimentation and systems change.
NoviThea Lab gives us room to investigate and test ideas beyond the limits of a single commission, including questions that matter before anyone has funded them.
Products emerge when research or experimentation shows that people need something they can continue to use after the original work has ended.
One does not have to lead to the next. A research project may settle a decision. An experiment may improve a method. Fieldwork may uncover a question worth taking into the Lab. A product may emerge when a recurring challenge requires something people can use directly. The form of the work depends on what the challenge requires.
Bring us a challenge
If the challenge cuts across disciplines, institutions or ways of working — or if existing responses are no longer holding up — talk to us about it.
